Systemic racism, xenophobia, and misplaced morality have been the root causes of most of the decisions made regarding drug policy in this country and throughout American history, disenfranchised communities have been disproportionately affected by these drug policies. In this informative session, we will delve into the intricate history of drug policy in the United States, exploring the history of federal legislation and dispel countless rumors and misconceptions about the war on drugs. We will shed light on the devastating impact that these policies have had on communities, making it impossible to ignore the need for more harm reduction services at every point of care for those struggling with substance use disorders. We hope that participants will utilize the understanding of the complicated history of United States drug policy and the impact it has had on marginalized communities over the years in their efforts to advocate for the need of progressive policies that prioritize harm reduction and equitable access to resources for those who struggle with substance use disorders and people who use drugs.
